Saptarishi — seven wise men, seven sons of Brahma, born from his mind. These Rishis are considered the creators of the Universe and the progenitors of all living beings. In the name of Sapta-rishi in Indian astrology are called the seven main stars of the constellation Ursa Major.
An early list of the seven Rishis is given in the “Jaiminia Brahmin”
These are Vasistha, Bharadwaja, Jamadagni, Gautama, Atri, Vishwamitra and Agastya.

In the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, Agastya is replaced by Atri.
The later Gopatha Brahman speaks of eight rsis: Vasishtha, Bharadwaja, Jamadagni, Gautama, Atri, Vishwamitra, Gungu, Agastya and Kashyapa.

In Vishnu Purana, their names are Kratu, Pulaha, Pulastya, Atri, Angiras, Vasishtha and Bhrigu. Later, the Seven Rishis are mentioned in the Vishnu Purana and two more are added to them.

…. then from the concentrated (Brahma) were born the intelligent descendants of their body and abilities that arose from the body (the essence of Brahma). From the members of the wise (Brahma) emerged «know the field.» I already told it earlier. All of them, gods and other creatures, as well as fixed (objects), remained as a receptacle of three gunas. But since these beings, moving and motionless, did not multiply, the wise (Brahman) created others, endowed with the mind of sons like themselves. These endowed with the mind — Bhrigu, Pulastya, Pulaka, Kratu, as well as Angiras, Marici, Daksha, Atri and Vasishtha.

Саптариши — семеро мудрецов, семь сыновей Брахмы, рождённые из его ума. Эти Риши считаются творцами Вселенной и прародителями всех ныне живущих существ. По именам Сапта-риши в индийской астрологии называются семь основных звёзд созвездия Большой медведицы.

Ранний список семерых Риши даётся в «Джайминия-брахмане»
Это: Васиштха, Бхарадваджа, Джамадагни, Гаутама, Атри, Вишвамитра и Агастья.В «Брихадараньяка-упанишаде» Агастья заменяется Атри.
В более поздней «Гопатха-брахмане» говорится о восьми риши: Васиштха, Бхарадваджа, Джамадагни, Гаутама, Атри, Вишвамитра, Гунгу, Агастья и Кашьяпа.

В «Вишну-пуране» их имена: Крату, Пулаха, Пуластья, Атри, Ангирас, Васиштха и Бхригу. Позднее, Семь риши упоминаются в «Вишну-пуране» и к ним добавлены еще два.

…. затем от сосредоточившегося (Брахмы) родились наделенные разумом потомки их тела и способности возникли от телесной (сущности Брахмы). От членов мудрого (Брахмы) появились «познавшие поле». Это я уже поведал ранее. Все они, боги и другие существа, а также неподвижные (предметы) пребывали как вместилище трех гун. Но, поскольку эти существа, движущиеся и неподвижные, не размножались, мудрый (Брахман) сотворил иных, наделенных разумом сынов, подобных себе. Эти наделенные разумом — Бхригу, Пуластья, Пулака, Крату, а также Ангирас, Маричи, Дакша, Атри и Васиштха.
